Garland City Council Candidate for District 2

My name is Kris Beard, and I'm excited to announce that I am running for election in May as your next Garland City Council Member for District 2. Deborah Morris, our District 2 representative for the last 6 years, has reached her term limits and is unable to run for re-election in 2024.

My husband, Bobby, and I are long time residents and fans of Garland. We have lived in District 2 for 34 years and both our children, as well as our foster son, attended GISD schools.

You might ask why I've decided to run for election now, and what makes me think I'd be the best choice to represent District 2.

The fact is, I've been involved in serving our community for a very long time now. I have a BA in Psychology from UT Tyler, and worked for over 20 years as a Case Manager for the nonprofit Autism Treatment Center in Dallas with group homes in Garland. I volunteered with the American Red Cross, teaching first aid and CPR classes. In the last 7 years I've served over 1,000 documented volunteer hours in the Garland City Marshal's office and the Garland Police Department.

I'm a graduate of the Garland Citizen Police Academy and Garland Citizen Fire Academy, and serve on the Rehab Team of the Citizens Firefighters Club of Garland. I've also served as president of the Chandler Heights Neighborhood Association in District 2 for the past 12 years.

I feel this is my next step to continue improving the quality of life in my neighborhood, community, and city. I have a proven track record of service. I'd like to serve as your representative on the City Council.

I am currently in Leadership Garland, class 43, with graduation in May 2024. I have served as our Neighborhood Crime Watch Coordinator for the past 10 years, including Citizens on Patrol. I have taken numerous classes on disaster management and was on Garland's CERT Team 1, until it was disbanded. I have been certified as a Storm Spotter, by the National Weather Service since 2008.

I am proficient in conversational ASL, and have certification from the University of Illinois in Deaf-Blind Studies.

My life has been dedicated to serving others through work and volunteering. I look forward to serving you as your City Council Representative.
